South Africa’s footwear imports jump to $336 mn in July-Sept 2022

South Africa’s footwear imports jumped to $336.033 million in July-September 2022, highest levels in the last six quarters. The country had imported footwear worth $209.606 million in April-June 2022 and $233.477 million in June-September 2021. The imports rose by more than 60 per cent in the latest quarter of this year over the preceding quarter. 

South Africa’s footwear imports of July-September 2022 noted an impressive growth of 44 per cent compared to the corresponding period of last year. They were worth $230.864 million in January-March 2022, $233.738 million in October-December 2021 and $174.766 million in April-June 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market insight tool TexPro. 

Footwear imports stood at $885.525 million in 2019 but slipped to $674.295 million in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Imports touched $776.504 million in the first three quarters of this year, and they may surpass the inbound shipment of 2021 and 2019. The country had imported footwear worth $925.437 million in 2018 and $859.055 million in 2017.

As per TexPro, China was the largest supplier of footwear for South Africa with a share of 57.87 per cent out of the total imports in the first three quarters of this year. The country had supplied footwear worth $449.145 million in the period under review. 

Vietnam (19.48 per cent), Indonesia (6.11 per cent), Italy (5.16 per cent) and India (2.37 per cent) were the other top five footwear supplying countries.
