Japanese sportswear firm ASICS swings back to profit in Q3 FY21



ASICS, a Japanese sports apparel and footwear producer, has reported a 29.8 per cent sales rise to ¥322.2 billion (Japanese yen) in the third quarter (Q3) of FY21 ended on September 30, 2021, compared to sales of ¥248.2 billion in the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal. The company’s profit for the quarter surged to ¥19.0 billion (Q3 FY20: loss ¥3.4 billion).

 

ASICS, a sports apparel and footwear producer, has reported a 29.8 per cent sales rise to ¥322.2 billion (Japanese yen) in the third quarter (Q3) of FY21 ended on September 30, 2021, compared to sales of ¥248.2 billion in the corresponding quarter of previous fiscal. The company’s profit for the quarter surged to ¥19.0 billion (Q3 FY20: loss ¥3.4 billion).

Gross profit for the nine-month period was ¥161.3 billion (¥116.1 billion), while operating income for the period totalled to ¥35.8 billion (¥3.2 billion). The sports equipment brand’s e-commerce sales during Q3 FY21 recorded a 12 per cent rise in North America, 47 per cent in Europe, and 23 per cent in China.

Categorically, sales of performance running category grew 38.0 per cent to ¥167.4 billion (¥121.3 billion) due to strong sales in all regions, and core performance sports business jumped 29.7 per cent to ¥35.2 billion (¥27.2 billion). Sports style sales during Q3 escalated by 19.5 per cent to ¥26.5 billion (¥22.2 billion), while apparel and equipment sales climbed 18.6 per cent to ¥25.4 billion (¥21.4 billion), attributed to strong sales in the Japan, North America and Europe regions.

Moreover, Onitsuka Tiger’s sales grew 19.5 per cent to ¥30.4 billion (¥25.4 billion) due to strong sales in the China and Southeast and South Asia regions.

By region, ASICS sales across all regions improved in the reported quarter: Japan ¥86.3 billion, North America ¥66.2 billion, Europe ¥90.9 billion, Greater China ¥41.0 billion, Oceania ¥19.2 billion, South East and South Asian ¥7.7 billion, and Others ¥26.2 billion.
