Bangladesh’s exports of leather goods at $1,120 mn in June-May 2023

Bangladesh’s exports of leather and leather goods (Chapters 41-43 and 6403) remained relatively steady in the first eleven months of fiscal 2022-23 (July-June). Provisional data released by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) showed outbound shipments valued at $1,120.24 million from June 2022 to May 2023, marking a 0.42 per cent increase compared to the same period last year. 

In the corresponding period from June 2021 to May 2022, Bangladesh had exported leather and leather goods worth $1,115.58 million. The country set a strategic target of $1,301.81 million for exports in the first eleven months of this year. Consequently, the actual shipments for the period under review fell 13.95 per cent short of the target. Bangladesh has established an overall target of $1,440 million for exports of leather and leather products. Last year, these exports amounted to $1,245.18 million. 

Bangladesh’s exports of leather (Chapter 41) fell by 18.11 per cent to $114.93 million between June 2022 and May 2023, compared to the $139.93 million shipped during the same period last year. However, exports of leather products (Chapters 42-43) rose by 19.43 per cent to $361.47 million, up from $302.66 million. Leather footwear exports (Chapter 6403) saw a decrease of 4.28 per cent to $644.18 million, compared to $672.98 million in the same period the previous year. 

From June 2022 to May 2023, Bangladesh’s leather and leather goods exports slightly increased to $1,120.24 million, a 0.42 per cent rise from the previous year.
Despite a drop in leather and footwear exports, an increase in other leather goods boosted the total.
However, the exports were 13.95 per cent below the strategic target set for this period.
